Among Us is a wildly popular multiplayer social deduction game developed by Innersloth, originally released in 2018. The game gained explosive popularity in 2020 thanks to streamers and content creators on platforms like Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok.

Among Us has become a cultural phenomenon and an iconic representative of the party game genre.

What Is Among Us?

Among Us is an online or local party game for 4 to 15 players. Players are randomly assigned roles at the beginning of each round—Crewmates or Impostors. The Crewmates' job is to complete a list of mini-tasks aboard a spaceship or base, while Impostors try to sabotage their mission and eliminate them.

Among Us includes several unique maps, such as:

  • The Skeld – the original map, resembling a spaceship
  • MIRA HQ – a corporate headquarters
  • Polus – a research base on a snowy planet
  • The Airship – the largest and most complex map

These diverse environments offer distinct task lists, security systems, and vent pathways for Impostors to sneak through.

Gameplay: How Among Us Works

Each game of Among Us takes place in rounds with players performing tasks or trying to outsmart each other. Here’s how the roles and gameplay work:

Crewmates

  • Objective: Complete all tasks before the Impostors eliminate everyone.
  • Tasks: Range from simple actions like swiping a card, fixing wiring, fueling engines, to scanning in MedBay.
  • Tools: Crewmates can use Security Cameras, Vitals Monitors, Admin Map, or Door Logs to spot suspicious activity.
  • Meetings: Crewmates can report dead bodies or call Emergency Meetings to discuss and vote out suspected Impostors.

Impostors

  • Objective: Eliminate enough Crewmates to equal their number.
  • Abilities: Can sabotage systems (lights, oxygen, reactors), vent to move stealthily, and blend in by pretending to do tasks.
  • Strategy: Timing is everything—strike when isolated and sow chaos during discussions to mislead others.

Each round can end in:

  • A Crewmate victory if all tasks are completed or all Impostors are ejected.
  • An Impostor victory if they outnumber the Crewmates or sabotage successfully.

Why Among Us Is So Addictive

Among Us mixes social dynamics with light strategy and high replay value. No two games are the same—one round you’re a loyal Crewmate, the next you’re a master Impostor. The blend of tension, humor, and unexpected twists makes it incredibly engaging for both casual players and hardcore strategists.

Tips to Win

As a Crewmate:

  • Stick with a buddy system to stay safe.
  • Learn the map layouts to finish tasks efficiently.
  • Use observation—fake tasks, inconsistent behavior, or vent usage are red flags.

As an Impostor:

  • Blend in: Fake tasks convincingly and move naturally.
  • Use sabotage strategically to separate players or delay meetings.
  • Plant doubt and turn suspicion toward others during discussions.
